   Traveling Exhibit

Over the River and Through the Woods: Getting Around Southern Illinois is an exciting new traveling exhibit created by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Historic Sites Division Southern Partnership Project. This 8 x 10 foot free standing exhibit focuses on the modes of transportation used throughout Southern Illinois from prehistoric times through 1850. Colorful graphics, illustrations and interpretive maps are paired with interpretive text and narrative quotes from those who journeyed to an around early Illinois via both rivers and trails. Innovations in transportation are discussed, along with the pros and cons of various forms of travel. In addition, a timeline provides a narrative of the ongoing settlement patterns of Southern Illinois and their impact upon the region up to the advent of railroads.
