Developing A Local Survey Program -- $20
This handbook from the Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions
and the IHPA addresses many concerns about implementing a local survey program.
This publication, approximately 425 pages, includes a wide range of information
that will assist local commissions with organzing the survey, creating the
survey form, working with volunteers and consultants, researching historic
properties, compiling the final product, and producing materials from the
survey results. It contains articles and sample materials from national,
state, and local sources as well as a questionnaire completed by communities
and consultants who have conducted historic resources surveys. The respondents
of the questionnaire provide their accounts of the survey process and insights
based upon their experiences. Click here for

The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation:
Intrepretation and Application video -- Download, watch or order your
DVD copy below for $10.
Broad enough to apply to an 1810 brick house, a 1900 steel truss bridge,
or a 1961 Bertrand Goldberg-designed public housing project, the Secretary
of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation guide thousands of building
rehabilitation projects across the nation each year. Richly illustrated
with images of actual building projects, this 30-minute video examines
the interpretation and application of the Standards. The Standards offer
sound advice for building owners, architects, and contractors. The Standards
also form the basis for both local historic design guidelines and for
preservation review at the local, state, and federal and levels. What's
architecturally significant about an historic building? When are non-original
alterations to a building historically important? Why is it better to
repair than replace historic materials? How can archeology relate to a
building project? What's the best way to design additions to historic
buildings, or new construction in historic districts? This video discusses
each of these issues, and others, within the framework of the ten Rehabilitation
Standards. Click here for order form!
