Lincoln Hall Window
Study
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The state of Illinois funded a major research study on the treatments
to the original wood windows on Lincoln Hall, a century-old academic building
on the core of the campus. This study was done as part of a larger renovation
program for the building. The technical study looked at various window
treatments but ended up focusing on three; new storm windows, retrofitting
the existing sash with insulated glass, or aluminum-clad wood replacement
windows. All three options were investigated using a fifty-year Life Cycle
Assessment methodology that emphasized energy and maintenance costs. The
study provides useful technical research into the treatments of historic
windows for a type of window that is common on both the U of I campus
and other similar buildings across the nation. Detailed energy performance
testing was done, as well as cost analysis for the various options. The
final economic conclusion of also revealed some of the difficulties of
projecting future performance of new materials and assemblies.
The University of Illinois web site provides an architectural overview
of the campus. Information about Lincoln Hall and other significant structures
on the campus can be found at the UIUC website.
