MISSION: Illinois is a collaborative effort among IHPA, GIS2GPS.com,
and Illinois schools to increase GIS/GPS awareness and to update the information
contained in HAARGIS (the Historic Architectural / Archaeological Resources
Geographic Information System).
Ed and Nancy Gorny and their GIS2GPS
team will provide lesson plans and training on how to use the geographic
positioning system (GPS) hardware and geographic information system (GIS)
software. Students and teachers will learn to use this cutting-edge technology
by pinpointing historic properties in their community by using the HAARGIS
Web site or by using data from HAARGIS in a GIS software program. Students
study the background of their local historical landmarks through HAARGIS
and from other resources, and verify the location of the properties by
using a GPS. Students can also recommend additional sites from their community
to be recorded in HAARGIS!
